Based on a survey, the University of Gävle, in cooperation with the Autonomous University of Madrid, investigated sustainability being taught, sustainability competences developed, and pedagogical approaches used at European Higher Education Institutions.
There has been considerable progress in the incorporation of sustainable development (SD) into higher education institutions’ curricula. This has included research on competences for SD and pedagogical approaches used; however, there has been limited research on the connection between how pedagogical approaches are used and how these approaches may support development of sustainability competences. A survey of European Higher Education Institutions was carried out to investigate how sustainability was being taught, how sustainability competences were being developed, and what pedagogical approaches were being used (for the results please check https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/11/6/1602). As a next step, the researchers will take into account the institutional perspective through case studies and enlarge the focus to all teachers, not just those who teach sustainability.
