CIRSES (Collective for the Integration of Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development in Higher Education) is a French network dedicated to the integration of social responsibility and sustainable development (SRSD) within higher education and research institutions since 2013. It supports sustainability officers and coordinators in their day-to-day missions by providing expertise, resources, training activities, and opportunities for peer exchange.
Since its creation, CIRSES has been working to strengthen the integration of sustainable development across institutional strategies. The network facilitates access to sector-specific information, organises thematic events and professional development activities.
One of CIRSES’s core activities is the coordination of the French DD&RS label (Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility label for higher education institutions). As an operator of the label, CIRSES supports institutions in understanding and applying the DD&RS framework, a comprehensive reference system covering governance, education, research, environmental management, and social policy. This national framework was created in 2009 by the ministries of higher education and environmental transition. The labelling process is based on peer review: CIRSES trains auditors from higher education institutions, coordinates audit procedures, and is responsible for the final decision regarding the awarding of the DD&RS label. The framework serves as a strategic tool to support institutional steering, assessment, and continuous improvement.
