The University of Siena was founded in 1240. The city’s university grew constantly during the twentieth century, passing from four hundred students enrolled between the two World Wars to over twenty thousand students in recent years. At the same time the number of faculties increased from the original Medicine and Surgery and Law to include 15 Departments at present, which manage research and didactics.

Overall, the University of Siena has about 18445 first and second cycle students, 609 doctoral students and 715 students enrolled in its post-graduate courses or in specialisation courses. The research and teaching staff comprises 1390 persons; the technical and administrative staff numbers 1643.

The University of Siena has always seen the process of internationalization as the means to and primary aim of the recognition and enhancement of its training and research activities and carries out several strategic actions and programmes in the field of the international cooperation.

The University is now the host of the prestigious Mediterranean hub for the UN Sustainble Developement Solutions Network. This regional network will gather member universities, research centres and businesses interested in identifying and promoting Solutions Initiatives in the Mediterranean basin.
